How do I save web pages and on my laptop so I can use them at school when offline?

The typical scenario here might be that you use a laptop with your whiteboard.  You can connect to the Web at home and have found some web pages with super information, activities or games which  you want to use in the classroom with the whiteboard.  Either you can't connect to the Web at school or the connection is too slow or unreliable.  Here is what you do.

  • When on-line go to the Web page you want to use offline at school.
  • On the 'Favorites' menu in Internet Explorer, select 'Add to Favorites'.
  • Click in the 'Make available offline' tick-box.
  • If you want to, change the file name in the box to something meaningful.
  • Click the 'OK' button - a 'synchronization' window with a progress bar will appear while the page downloads to your computer - the message 'Synchronization complete' will appear when the page has been saved and the window will then close.  (Note that if you get your Internet feed through the City Council's corporate IT services then you may find this facility has been 'blocked' for security reasons).
  • To test whether it has worked, on the 'File' menu of Internet Explorer select 'Work Offline'
  • Now go to the 'Favorites' menu and select the appropriate 'Favorite' - the name will be the one you chose when you did 'Add to Favorites' earlier.
  • The page and its contents should now be accessible when you are not connected to the Internet - but do remember to first select the 'Work Offline' option on the 'File' menu of Internet Explorer when you want to access offline pages.
  • In some instances you may want to automatically save those pages which link to your Web page - this might be necessary if the page you want to use offline contains some sort of interactive game or quiz.  To do this, click on the 'Customize' button after selecting 'Add to Favorites'.  Select 'Yes' in the window which next appears and try downloading pages 1 link deep from your main page.  You can change the '1' to a '2' and download pages 2 links deep from the main page but be warned, if your main page has lots of links you can use up lots of time and disk space saving all the linked pages!  Best start at '1' and then see if that does the trick.  Keep clicking the 'Next' buttons in each window until you reach the 'Finish' button, and leave the other options as they are.

What do I do if the board pen stops working and all wires have been checked for correct connection and the board has been started correctly?

If the board pen stops working and all wires have been checked for correct connection and the board has been started correctly then it seems the board has somehow lost it's drivers.

  • Go to add/ remove programs in the control panel
  • select activdriver. If the driver is not working correctly then it will give you the options to add/remove or restore program. (if the problem is not related to the drivers then it will not give the option to restore).
  • Click on restore.

The problem should be fixed but the board will need calibrating again.
